Clark Regional Medical Center Urges Women to Take Heart Attack Symptoms Seriously
February 9, 2023
WINCHESTER, Ky. (February 9, 2023) – Clark Regional Medical Center released a video today to spread awareness about the dangers of heart attacks in women. Despite popular misconceptions, heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States, with heart attacks being a major contributor.
In the video, Clark patient Zachari explains that she had symptoms like acid reflux but realized it was something more serious and called 911. On the way to the hospital, Zachari’s heart stopped. Fortunately, she made it to Clark Regional Medical Center where the well-equipped medical team in the Cardiac Cath Lab, led by Dr. Ananth Kumar, quickly responded.
Heart attack symptoms in women can differ from men and may not be as well known. Often people associate well-known symptoms such as chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, fatigue, and pain or discomfort in other parts of the body such as the neck, jaw, or arms with a heart attack. Women may also experience symptoms such as indigestion, dizziness, and lightheadedness.
Ananth Kumar, MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist at Clark Regional Medical Center, emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if heart attack symptoms are present. “Time is of the essence in treating a heart attack. The quicker a patient receives treatment, the better their outcomes will be,” says Dr. Kumar.
Clark Regional Medical Center encourages women to make heart health a priority by following a heart-healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management. They also recommend speaking with a healthcare provider about the potential for heart disease and the best steps to prevent it.
